A Vehicle for Something Else
Brooklyn, NY
This project is a collection of fabrics woven and knit from former textiles that had been tossed away, salvaged, cut up, and then re-woven. They are tapestries that resemble blueprints for motor vehicles. These works were operated in public parks around Brooklyn, New York, by Emily Holtzman and Malaika Temba. The central image is drawn from a self-help parenting book that was popular in the States in the 1990s within which mothers were advised to have difficult conversations with their daughters behind the wheels of a car. What sorts of vehicles of discussion are needed today, to convey urgencies, strategies, and advice through our scattered communication systems?
