In San Francisco, the Bayview and Hunters Point neighborhoods where I work have been subject to radioactive waste contamination for the past 30+ years.

Small sponges have been made from cutting and weaving pieces of clothing that were at once deeply loved but are no longer wearable because of soiling, sizing, and time. These sponges are soaked in fresh, filtered water from across the city, transported to the neighborhoods, and left to sample the environment.

As water evaporates from places with a high level of attention to their infrastructure, what is absorbed in the drying process is unseen, carrying the uncertainty of toxicity.

Each drying is accompanied by observation notes, temperature recording, and the AQI reading of that day and time.
